Not only could this cause devastating consequences in the event of an accident, it is also an offence. An incorrectly installed child restraint does incur a fine as well as a loss of demerit points per seat.

*A restraint with excessive movement, a poor fitting harness, a twist in the tether, a child's shoulder not reaching the indicators, an expired child restraint or a child restraint with inserts that did not come with that specific seat would fail to pass as 'correctly installed *(Road Rules 2014, Rule 266 (1).

The suggested minimum height for using a seatbelt is 145cm or taller, which is your average 10 year old! The child needs to meet the 5 step test to safely travel without a restraint to safely travel in the vehicles seat which is ultimately designed to protect an 'adult' sized body.
