Kiama Blowhole & Kiama Walks

Tell your kids that you off to the largest Blowhole in the world! When there is a good southerly or south easterly wind blowing - you are highly likely to get some decent blowhole action!

Parking is close by and there is a cafe, public toilets and visitor info centre within 300 metres. Viewing platforms provide safe places for little ones to view this awesome natural phenomena and watch out on days with big seas and winds as you may get quite wet if you're close!

Bring your camera and film the gleeful enjoyment and and gasps as you get a big spray out of the Blowhole!

There are play parks if you walk round the harbour side area (not gated) and endless cafes, restaurants and cutesy shops in which is browse in Kiama town which is  about 1.5km walk from the Blowhole.

Discover a variety of cycleways to suit every level, novice to professional; it's a great place for a ride! Cyclists will find designated bike paths and lanes, shared paths, on road & off road options. Explore easy flat areas along with plenty of hills for a more challenging ride, and that stunning scenery, be it coastal or rural, is always part of the experience. Kiama has a strong and welcoming community of bike riders, Kiama BUGS who have regular weekly rides and special outings. Kiama Coast Walk

A stunning 22 km pathway accompanying our sparkling coastline. The spectacular Walk begins at Minnamurra and wanders past headlands, rivers, beaches, Kiama town centre (stop for a coffee!) up to Blowhole Point then on towards the Little Blowhole passing more beaches and bays before winding up at Werri Beach.

You will find route markers and interpretative signs frequently along the way. The last 6 km between Loves Bay and Werri Beach is particularly blessed with its own rugged and untouched natural beauty. Keep an eye out for whales (May to November) and sea eagles and hawks all year round. With its spectacular ocean views, inviting detours and proximity to amenities and public transport, the Kiama Coast Walk is the perfect way to explore and enjoy our region.

Birdlife, basalt, beaches, bays and blowholes are just the beginning. With so much to discover, this guide divides the Walk into three natural sections (each taking between 1.5 - 3 hours to complete). Take your time or take your marks - choose your own pace and plan your trip to make the most of quality accommodation, eateries and attractions along the way.

The local train line stops at Minnamurra, Bombo, Kiama and Gerringong which means you won't have to loop back. The Kiama Coast Walk is a mix of sealed pathways, beaches and grassed tracks - suitable for most levels of fitness. So step right up and explore Kiama on foot today - enjoy the walk!

Section 1 : Minnamurra to Blowhole Point 8.4 km - 3 hours Start at the mouth of the Minnamurra River, great for a swim or snorkel. Make a mental note to come back for fishing or a canoe trip. Head south and you will pass Jones Beach, Cathedral Rocks, Bombo Beach, Kiama Harbour and quite possibly a tempting cafe or two. Keep walking till you get to the lighthouse & Blowhole Point. For those that don't mind being sidetracked, the Boneyard, Bombo Quarry and Spring Creek Wetlands are all worthy diversions.

Section 2 : Blowhole Point to Kiama Heights 5 km - 1.5 hours For the most part this section takes you through a series of waterfront reserves; Storm Bay, Surf Beach, Kendalls Beach, Easts Beach and Loves Bay, laced together by headlands. The Little Blowhole is midway along this section. Take a break here to check out this unusual water feature in action. There are great views at every turn, especially looking back towards Kiama and the lighthouse.

Section 3 : Kiama Heights to Werri Beach 6 km - 2hrs one way Leave the world behind. From here on it's just you along the cliff tops marvelling at the sea and solitude, except perhaps for a whale or some bird life. Other Walks There is nothing like walking to get the feel of a place. Step this way, we have plenty of marked and unmarked walks & tracks throughout the coast and hinterland. Coastal walks, heritage trails, bush walks - get maps, guide, tips and user friendly details from the Kiama Visitor Centre.

Barren Grounds Nature Reserve offers a variety of walks ranging from 2km to 8km and is a bird watches paradise that encompasses the Illawarra Lookout. Access is from Jamberoo Mountain Road, and also includes the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre that features 4.2km of elevated and paved walking tracks and is accessible to all ages.

The user-friendly Kiama Walk-it map identifies locations of popular walking paths and tracks and also provides information on the time taken to complete each walk, distance and grade of difficulty.

Notes and Tips for Walkers: It's rare, but after heavy rain Werri Lagoon might be open to the sea, and may inhibit your walk on to Werri Beach.

Contact Kiama Visitor Centre for an update 02 4232 3322. Do not leave children unattended. Some parts of the walks are along unprotected cliff tops, everyone needs to be mindful and sensible. Make sure you take water with you, use sun protection and suitable footwear. Be prepared in wet weather. Take your mobile phone. Although remember reception may be broken at times. Don't walk alone. Let someone know your plans and time of return. Avoid the middle of the day in summer time, early morning is best. Don't start long walks after midday in winter, just in case it takes longer than you planned. Be mindful of your own fitness level and abilities...
